Recent Crow Woodcut Prints

Above are three of eight recent prints (EV or Edition Verite - meaning I used the same 9x12 woodblock for all 8 prints but experimented with a different technique when printing each one). These were done in a recent woodblock cutting class at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley.  Top two prints are examples of Chine Colle, using different Japanese kozo papers.  Prints are 11" x 15." Prints 4/8, 7/8 and 8/8 are variations on the black ink theme (as in 3/8 above).   Print 5/8 is another version of Chine Colle, seen above in print 2/8, and print 6/8 was given to my very knowledgeable Kala teacher Claire Kessler-Bradner.  There is no intentional symbolism related to the 7 circles behind the Crow, although I could make something up if provoked.

Two Rose Woodcuts

My first home cut & printed woodcuts!  Mixed media Rose and Rose II were printed on the Lindstrom Machine Works etching press inherited from my father.  Lindstrom Machine Works presses were manufactured in San Francisco at 231 First St. but the company is long gone.  Woodcuts measure 4x6 inches.  Prints are made with Gamblin oil-based inks printed on Reves BFK paper torn approx. 7 1/2 x 11 1/4 inches.

Embroidered Blue Birds

Above are six new felted blue birds, created for a bird quilt in the works.  These birds are based on my button bird and friends poster (as seen in the bird print with moon).  Each bird is made by machine punching hand dyed Falkland wool top into Kaufman Kona cotton cloth, then adding machine and hand embroidery. The wool, apparently, was grown on sheep in the Falkland Islands.  I bought it from Twisted Filament's Etsy shop.

Queen Tut Silk Quilt

Latest, very time consuming, quilt finished!  Measuring 48" wide x 66 3/4" high, this lounge-worthy original design is composed of all silk fabrics with a cotton flannel backing.  The light and darker brown silks are from a Thai silk spread purchased by Elsa and Rick Zisook in Thailand - now cut up and reused by me.  The central "watercolor" quilted section is composed of eight separate pieces of silk, some originally retailing for close to $300/yard, purchased from eBay (for much less than their retail price) in a box of assorted silk samples.  These eight silk samples were cut up into 768 1" squares, then sewn together on Pellon 820 Quilter's grid fusible polyester.  Stitch in the ditch quilting applied to the top portion of the quilt, but the bottom was finished using two separate stencil designs.  It was hard getting the entire quilt through the small space on my Bernina B215 sewing machine, but I managed it without breaking anything.  I love my machine!!

E.A. Autrey Quilted Grocery Bag

Now that 93 year old E.A. Autrey cannot drive his van anymore, I made him a deluxe two-sided canvas grocery bag with one of his self portraits on one side and a favorite bucket oil painting on the other.  Going to the store on the bus with this bag should be lots of fun!

Camping Collecting Stencil Cut-outs

What's cooler to find than a collection of original stencil cut-outs?  Well, maybe bird feathers, interesting leaves and a few beautiful rocks.  Hopefully the little Longbow campers will find all of these treasures to collect in their new treasure bags when they go camping next week!   See prior post for the treasure bags here:  http://autreyart.blogspot.com/2013/08/fun-with-fabric.html

Fun With Fabric

A gift bag, five treasure bags and a grocery bag with a quilted art panel.  Having fun sewing with printed art on fabric, laminated fabrics, and grommets!
