In The Garden from watercolor to digital painting

Years ago, I painted a little mini series of watercolor paintings, each about a place, and each 10 x 7 on Arches paper.  I then blew some of them up and printed them larger.  I liked this one, so I did an illustrator version continuing the "In The Garden" theme.  I thought I could turn it into some loud fabric design, but now realize I'll have to work a bit more to have the pattern repeat successfully.

Flower Garden - new little video with original soundtrack

My sister Susan recorded some little jigs with her cello.  I wanted to use some of the music, so I put together a little video of recent flower photos with older insect drawings and computer-generated fractals to go with the music.  I added a few Cubase loops as well.

Lotus Pond Mixed Media Photo Collage

Like the previous post, this mixed media collage of cut up photographs, a variety of papers, and pen & ink, glued onto Arches watercolor paper (11x15), includes images from a photo of orange and yellow flowers, shot at the Botanical Gardens in Mendocino in 2015 (below).  Also included here are some cut-outs from a print of a digital composite, comprised of an underwater photo shot in the Galapagos together with a field of Calla Lilies in Mendocino - both shot this year.  The inspiration for the piece is a photo of a Lotus Pond in the beautiful "Extreme Horticulture" book by John Pfahl with an introduction by Rebecca Solnit.

What is this Photograph About?

My latest LensWork magazine's editorial exhorts every photographer to shoot with a purpose, rather than simply snap a picture because it looks pretty.  This is something I am trying to do more often.   Having just spent a few wonderful days with twin grandsons, 60 years younger than me, I've been thinking about family and the differences in age (from the amount of energy one has, to how one perceives reality).  These thoughts took me out into the garden, seeking images that reflect the cycle of life.

Wilson Taylor and Grandma Lucy Art

Artwork by Wilson (one week shy of his 5th birthday), created on his own and with his grandma Lucy in Seattle, July 2014, is better than any of the art Lucy saw at museums and galleries in Seattle on her last trip. Top to bottom:
1.  Cole and Wilson: pen & ink and colored pencil on brown craft paper 9x12.  Cole did add some color to this one, but generally he was happiest putting together exotic Lego sculptures.
2.  Garden:  pen & ink and colored pencil on pink craft paper.
3.  Grandma and Me:  pen & ink and marker on pink craft paper.
4.  Raindrops and Rainbows:  Watercolor and ink 6x9
5.  Rainbow:  Crayon on plain paper 8 1/2 x 11
6.  Eclectic:  (includes art by Wilson's dad Matt Taylor on yellow stick-its + an elephant) and a pen & ink rooted flower by Grandma Lucy

In the Garden

Pen and ink and watercolor.  Question is - should I do this as a large oil or paint more birds?

Repainted Back Garden 3

It was observed, correctly, that I tend to paint inside the box.  It's true - the mathematical side of my brain loves things to be neat and tidy.  I heard the artistic side of my brain crying out to be freed from the tyranny of my organized self and repainted this 24"x18" oil on canvas which used to look like this.  I like it better now.
