New Fabric Designs and a Contest Entry

I'm back doing more fabric designs, which are available in my Spoonflower shop here:  https://www.spoonflower.com/profiles/lucy_autrey_wilson.
Some of the new designs are not yet available but will be soon.  They can be seen by clicking on the "designs not for sale" button.  I have to buy test samples before I can sell.   Some of what's new is described below
 Top to Bottom
1.  New coronavirus repeating fabric design.  The viruses were created with Illustrator and Photoshop, then layered on top of a photo of a chain link fence in front of a garden which was modified to more closely appear like an electron microscope scanned viral specimen.
2.  I painted a Dodo with pen & ink and watercolor, put it on a watercolor rainbow painting and added scanned cheesecloth.
3.  An old fabric design of a bacteria.  Face masks made with bacteria and/or virus image fabrics seems like something that makes perfect sense.
4.  Last, but not least, I created a Poster Tea Towel image (to be printed on linen) as my entry into a Spoonflower contest.  I painted the image (actually a larger version of it) while on one of my many Ibiza vacations.   Voting starts Oct. 22.  You can vote here:  https://www.spoonflower.com/design-challenge

When in Doubt Cut it UP

I didn't like my collage much after looking at it for a few months (bottom image).  So I cut it up and embroidered it onto another painting I didn't like that much (top image).  Now I like it better!

California Sunshine Quilt

Finally finished my mega quilt!  80 individual photographs printed on fabric and woven into the quilt using an original plaid design.  Photos of my artist wooden models were used as templates for the four characters, which were then appliqued onto silk swatches using some cool Martha Negley designed fabric.  They looked a bit naked, even after adding the birds, so I later added bathing suits with a fabric I designed and printed.  The quilt is so big (74 1/4" h x 66 3/4" w) I had to do it in three sections then sew the sections together at the end.  What's going on in this quilt, you ask?  Well, I love California, I love the sun, I love taking photos in my neighborhood on sunny days, and I love birds.

Repainting Old Artworks

There is nothing quite so fun as doing something over.  Top to Bottom:
1.  Pink Flamingo with Yellow Roses:  This started out as 3 separate photos, one shot in the Galapagos, on in my garden and another who knows where (Berkeley Botanical Garden?).  These were composited and printed on the exceptional paper Kozo Dbl Layer and glued on a cradled board 8x10.  I just painted over it with gouache and acrylic.  I like it better now.
2.  In March 2011 I shot a brick pattern in Seattle that I later printed on fabric and glued onto a 8x10 board.    Finally got around to painting it with gouache, acrylic and enamel.
3.  I took a photo from the top of Mt. Tamalpais during a photography class in 2016 at dusk and printed it out on quality paper 13x19.  Kind of boring!  I just painted in a large crow landing with some other gouache highlights.

Bird Art for MOS (Part 3 of 3)

Mixed Media (collage, woodcut, gum arabic transfer).  Top to Bottom:
1.  Woman with a Bird on her Head:  collage with cut up photographs, papers and original art on paper.
2.  Crow Olympic Rings:  One of a series of digitally enhanced woodcut prints with various painted backgrounds.
3.  Crow's Nest:  Gum Arabic transfer on paper on board with R&F oil sticks and graphite.

Bird Art for MOS (Part 2 of 3)

Fabric and Photo Bird Art - top to bottom:
1.  Funky Bird Wall Hanging quilt with an applique bird, in a photo of a window shot in India and printed onto cotton fabric.
2.  Spoonbill in Florida large quilt with applique and some batik fabric bought on the same India trip.
3.  Black Bird:  Embroidered bird drawing on nylon mesh, glued over hand made paper on board.
4.  Funky Birds Going the Wrong Way:  3D digital models of fabric bird appliques, collaged with a photograph of a street arrow.
5.  Simple Photography of a Blue-footed Booby bird shot on a trip to the Galapagos.

Bird Art for MOS (Part 1 of 3)

Cold and Hot Wax art on Board - top to bottom:
1.  Rainbow Crow:  An original crow drawing, printed and transferred to paper with gum arabic, then combined with R&F oil sticks, cold wax and other media.
2.  Avoiding Danger:  Cold wax and oil sticks plus stencils on cradled encausticbord.
3.  Irritated Crow:  Photo on paper on board with hot wax.  The board was outside for years developing a lovely natural patina of mold.
4.  Two Blue Birds:  Hot wax over paper on board.  I initially embroidered the birds into nylon mesh, but they melted when I heated the wax, forming waxy bird impressions which were then painted over with oil paints.

These will be on exhibit at my Marin Open Studios (MOS) the first two weekends in May.  https://marinopenstudios.org/artist/631/
